Art is an exploration, a way of seeing the world, a way of appreciating and understanding in my environment. To create, I must slow down and ponder the things that are often overlooked. Inspiration strikes in that instant – the moment when I notice something that I’ve looked at dozens of times in a way that is new and intriguing and the painting evolves into something personal.
Rocks in a coastal tide pool, tree roots clinging to earth, shiny skins of peppers and imperfect shapes of pears sitting in the kitchen bowel are among the subjects I notice and capture in my work. Using a bold palette of pastels, I layer colors to achieve texture, depth and richness, and enhance Mother Nature’s already fascinating display.Lines and squiggles and colors become tree trunks, feathers and stones, or perhaps a carrot or bright petal. And the painting evolves. These images frame my world. To create them is to preserve a piece of my experience.
